What is Pulp Treatment?
Pulp treatment is an umbrella term used to describe the treatment of the interior of a tooth, known as the pulp. The pulp is a collection of soft tissues and nerves found in the inner chamber of a tooth. When a tooth is healthy, it’s well-protected by several layers, including the dentin and enamel. However, when a tooth is decayed, cracked, or otherwise damaged, bacteria can gain access to the pulp, causing an infection.
The aim of pulp treatment is to heal or remove the diseased pulp to improve a child’s comfort and preserve the tooth until it’s ready to fall out naturally on its own.
Signs of Damaged Dental Pulp
As a parent, we know you do your best to keep your child’s oral health on the right track. However, accidents can happen and issues can slip through the cracks that create discomfort, like a tooth infection and damaged pulp. This is why it’s a good idea to know what signs to look out for, so you can know when it’s time to contact a pediatric emergency dentist in Lake Zurich:
- Persistent tooth sensitivity and pain
- A fever
- Facial swelling
- Dull or throbbing toothache
- Difficulty sleeping due to dental pain
Pulpotomy vs. Pulpectomy: The Different Types of Pulp Treatment
There are two different types of pulp treatment that we can complete, a pulpotomy and a pulpectomy. Which one we recommend will depend on your child’s symptoms and their diagnosis.
A pulpotomy only removes the portion of the pulp that is damaged, leaving the healthy pulp intact. On the other hand, when an infection has spread or it’s determined that no part of the pulp can be salvaged, a pulpectomy may be recommended. This treatment fully removes the pulp and restores the tooth, allowing the baby tooth to fall out naturally on its own to preserve the alignment of your child’s adult teeth.
If you believe that your child could benefit from pulp treatment or they are experiencing dental pain, don’t hesitate to reach out to our knowledgeable and friendly team. We will help you get the answers you’re looking for.
