Nitrous Oxide Dental Sedation
Often referred to by its nickname, “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a form of sedation that’s safe and suitable for children. It’s a colorless and odorless gas that is inhaled through a nasal mask. Once placed on your child’s face, they will begin to breathe in the mixture of nitrous oxide and oxygen. They will soon begin to feel more comfortable and relaxed, allowing our team to complete the necessary work to improve their smile. Better yet, the effects dissipate almost as soon as treatment ends, so your little one can resume their normal daily routine after the visit.
Who Is a Good Candidate for Nitrous Oxide?
Nitrous oxide is a good option for children who experience:
- Mild to moderate dental anxiety
- Phobia related to past dental trauma
- Difficulty sitting still for long periods
- A strong gag reflex
- A fear of needles
- Difficulty adjusting to the sights, sounds, and smells of a dentist’s office
When nitrous oxide or any dental sedation is considered, our team will require a scheduled consultation to discuss your child’s eligibility. We must know their medical history and any medications they are taking to ensure they can receive nitrous oxide safely and successfully.
How Does Nitrous Oxide Work?
As a sedation dentist for kids, our team of experts will first place a nasal mask over your child’s nose. After turning on the nitrous oxide mixture, we will instruct them to inhale the colorless and odorless gas. Within minutes, they will begin to feel more relaxed and at ease while in the dentist’s chair. Instead of expressing anxiety or worry about the care they are about to receive, they will remain comfortable and undeterred by their surroundings.
Your child will not be fully sedated; instead, they will remain sufficiently aware to respond to any cues we may require. However, don’t worry; they won't feel any pain during their visit.
Aftercare for Nitrous Oxide
One of the unique benefits of nitrous oxide that all other forms of sedation cannot provide is a fast recovery. As soon as the gas is turned off and the mask is removed, your child will be instructed to breathe pure oxygen for several minutes. During this time, the effects will wear off, allowing your child to feel like themselves again. They can return to school or home and resume all normal activities after treatment.
If your child’s dentist does provide aftercare instructions related to the type of procedure they receive, make sure they follow these guidelines to ensure a successful recovery.
General Anesthesiology
If general anesthesiology is recommended for your child, it might be because they suffer from extreme dental anxiety, or they’re preparing to undergo multiple dental treatments during one appointment. In either case, their comfort and safety are our top priority. We will administer the medication via an IV that is inserted in the hand or bend of the elbow. Soon, your child will be fully sedated, allowing them to sleep through the entire procedure. Our team will closely monitor them to ensure their safety throughout the appointment as treatment is performed. Once the IV is removed, they will likely remain groggy the rest of the day and will be required to return home and rest.
