Watching your baby reach new milestones can be exciting, but teething<\/a> can also bring some challenging days and nights. As your baby’s first teeth begin pushing through the gums, you may notice changes in their behavior and habits. While every baby experiences teething differently, there are several common signs parents can watch for.<\/p><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

1. Increased Drooling<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

One of the most noticeable signs of teething is increased drooling. Babies may produce more saliva as their mouths change and their teeth begin moving beneath the gums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All that extra moisture can also cause irritation around your baby’s mouth and chin. Gently wiping away drool and using a soft cloth can help keep the skin dry. If needed, your pediatrician can recommend a baby-safe product to protect irritated skin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Chewing on Everything<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Does your baby suddenly want to put every toy, finger, or household object in their mouth? Increased chewing and gnawing can be a sign that your baby’s gums are bothering them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pressure from chewing may temporarily soothe tender gums. Offer your baby a clean, age-appropriate teething toy instead of allowing them to chew on objects that could break apart or pose a choking hazard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some parents find that chilling a teething toy or clean, damp washcloth provides additional comfort. Avoid freezing teething items solid, as extremely cold objects can potentially hurt delicate gum tissue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Tender or Swollen Gums<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

As a tooth moves toward the surface, the surrounding gum tissue may become swollen, tender, or slightly red. You may even be able to see or feel a small ridge where a tooth is preparing to emerge!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can gently rub your baby’s gums with a clean finger to provide soothing pressure. Once the first tooth appears, begin brushing it twice a day with a soft infant toothbrush and a small smear of fluoride toothpaste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Changes in Mood or Sleep<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Teething can make some babies fussier than usual. Your normally happy baby may become more irritable, have difficulty settling down, or wake more frequently during the night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A consistent bedtime routine can help provide comfort during this period. Extra cuddling, gentle gum massage, and a cool teething toy may also help your baby settle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teething doesn\u2019t explain every symptom, though. A high fever, significant diarrhea, vomiting, or a baby who appears unusually ill should not automatically be attributed to teething. Contact your pediatrician if your baby develops concerning symptoms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teething is a normal part of your baby’s development, but it can be uncomfortable. If you’re concerned about your baby’s symptoms or aren’t sure whether they are related to teething, talk with your pediatrician or pediatric dentist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
